As 2024 comes to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on an incredible year at the DCSPCA. Thanks to your unwavering support, hundreds of animals have found their way to loving forever homes. Behind every wagging tail and contented purr is a story of transformation, hope, and second chances—stories that wouldn’t be possible without your generosity. Join us as we look back on some of the most heartwarming before-and-after tales from this past year.
Mollie
Poor Mollie had been in pain for a long time for numerous conditions that went untreated. A basic medical examination revealed that Mollie has been suffering from diabetes for years with no veterinary care. Her cataracts are most likely caused by diabetes-- they had gotten so bad that Mollie was almost completely blind.
Mollie also had severe dental disease from long-term neglect. Her teeth were terribly deteriorated and were affecting her jawbone. She was receiving medication for pain that must have been excruciating.
Mollie had likely been suffering from these severe conditions for years. With support from people just like you, Molly received the dental care and insulin she needed. She was adopted in September of 2024 and is now in the loving home she has always deserved.
Moosie
DCSPCA first met Moosie in November 2021. He had a prolapse and his family brought him into the shelter for treatment. DCSPCA's team gave him medical care and returned him to his home. Stitches are often enough to prevent prolapses from reoccurring.
In May 2023, Moosie's family brought him back to DCSPCA-- he had a prolapse again. Unfortunately, this meant that Moosie's condition was chronic. So he would need a more advanced surgery called colopexy to connect his colon to his abdominal wall. We treated Moosie's prolapse again and strongly urged his family to get him the colopexy surgery he needed.
Sadly, Moosie came back to the shelter with his third prolapse-- we were shocked to learn that his family had never gotten him the colopexy surgery he needed. Our team decided that Moosie would be safer in DCSPCA's care, so we took him into our shelter and rushed him to the emergency clinic once again.
Due to kind supporters like you, we raised $6,678.10 towards Moosie’s treatment and surgery and secured him the care he needed. Moosie went on to be adopted in August of 2024, and he is happy and healthy in his forever home! His owners decided, in honor of his experiences in life and his outgoing, happy personality, to slightly change his name to Moxie. He’s a full indoor cat with some sunning on the balcony and a 4th floor window perch. He is extremely affectionate, and living a great life.
Bryce
Bryce was a young, gorgeous, friendly dog who found himself on the euthanasia list at a local municipal shelter.
Due to limited space, this shelter could only house Bryce for 14 days. If they could not find placement in time, Bryce would be euthanized. As the days passed, the situation was becoming dire...
The shelter reached out to DCSPCA, asking if we could help to save this dog's life. DCSPCA immediately agreed to help-- we provided him with safe haven at our no-kill shelter in the nick of time.
We are dedicated to rescuing the neediest animals in our community - and we can only help due to support like yours.
Now, Bryce has happily found his forever home. Without your support, he may not have had his happy ending, but we can all rest easy knowing he’s healthy, happy, and safe.
As we celebrate the incredible milestones of this past year, we are reminded that none of it would be possible without the compassion and generosity of our supporters. Together, we’ve changed lives—not just for the animals, but for the families who’ve welcomed them home. As we look ahead to another year of rescue, rehabilitation, and love, we invite you to continue this journey with us. Here’s to creating even more happy endings in the year to come!
Barney
Barney was brought to the shelter by a Good Samaritan who found him wandering around the streets in Poughkeepsie. He had a shabby, unkempt appearance: dirty fur and overgrown nails. But most concerning of all was a clear misalignment to his jaw. Despite his obvious extreme discomfort, Barney's friendly personality made it clear that he was no feral cat.
DCSPCA's team immediately took Barney into our care and gave him an initial examination to see the cause of his jaw problem. Our fears were confirmed: Barney had been struck in the jaw.
We do not know if Barney was in a car accident, hit by a falling object... or struck in the face deliberately. What we did know was that he needed our help.
We brought Barney to a dental specialist, where he received life-changing corrective oral surgery. They placed temporary wires in Barney's jaw (that do not impede his ability to eat). With the wires in place, Barney's jaw bone was able to heal properly.
This incredible transformation was only possible because of generous supporters like you.
Barney was adopted in October of 2024, and has been thriving in his new home.
Here’s to a year of hope, healing, and happy endings! As we close the chapter on 2024, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for the generosity and compassion that made these incredible transformations possible. From Mollie's renewed health, to Moosie’s second chance at comfort, to Bryce’s rescue from the brink, and Barney’s transformation after trauma-- every story is proof of what we can achieve together. Thank you for being part of this journey and for standing beside us as we create brighter futures for animals in need. Together, let’s make 2025 another year of life-changing impact!
